Could you be a SLOGG?
The Senior Citizen Club, Slightly Older Guys & Gals, known as SLOGGS, was started by two ladies, Martha Faulds and Lillian Tucker in 1976. They used to meet twice a month. One was for a business meeting and a guest speaker. For the second meeting they took a day trip to a Dinner Theater or a new restaurant or even a boat ride.
The ladies also did crafts, such as ceramics, sewing, knitting and crocheting. They also had “White Elephant” sales. The Slightly Older Guys & Gals was a chartered member of the Prince George’s County Council of Senior Citizens. There were volunteers to be delegates for the year to attend the Council of Senior Citizens Meetings each month. The earliest Historian Book records we have is from 1976.
The SLOGGS were meeting once a month, on the second Thursday at St. Paul’s Moravian Church in Marlton of Upper Marlboro. They traveled to such places as Pennsylvania to see the Totem Poles, or to Philadelphia to see the Mummers Parade. The SLOGGS have done a lot of traveling over the years to many nice places. We have been to Niagara Falls, Canada; Alaska; Nova Scotia; Mackinac Island; Nashville, Tennessee; Cape Cod, Mass; Branson, Mo; and Hawaii.
We are no longer a charter member now, and we do not have a trip coordinator. We just meet once a month on the second Wednesday at Cheltenham UMC off Route 301 to have lunch and socialize. We still have committees to prepare the lunches. We still salute the flag, say grace before lunch, have inspirational stories and have a short meeting.
The SLOGGS Senior Citizens Group is looking for new members, young and old. We invited anyone interested to please come join us, and bring your crafts. We have a wonderful history and lots of pictures to show you about the Slightly Older Guys and Gals.
